ISLAMIC DREAM INTERPRETATION IN REFERENCE TO QUR’AN

In this article, our main focus would be to discuss Islamic dream Interpretation in the light of the Qur’an and Hadith.

We all see dreams. Isn’t it! According to a Hadith, Dreams are (1/40)th part of the Prophecy. They convey the information to an individual regarding the past, present, as well as the future.  There are the references in the Qur’an about the Dream Interpretation. The Prophet Joseph (Hazrat Yusuf) was given with the knowledge of interpreting Dreams. When Hazrat Yusuf (a.s.) was in Prison, he interpreted the Dream of the two individuals. His dream interpretation used to be so unique and real that he was called upon by the Pharoah of Egypt to interpret his Dream.

If the Prophet of ALLAH (S.W.T.) is interpreting the Dream, this means that Dream Interpretation in Islam is a true thing. Apart from these, there are several Hadith regarding Dream Interpretation in Islam which we will see in the upcoming sections.

TYPES OF DREAM

Dream Interpretation in Islam

The Dreams according to Ibn Sirin, Islamic spiritualists, and various other religious scholars have been categorized into three parts:

True Dreams (Good and Bad)

These are the dreams that are from ALLAH (S.W.T.) and conveys the information to the individual in sleep. The Good Dreams are from ALLAH (S.W.T.) while the Bad dreams are from the Satan (Shaitan). The good dreams either convey glad tidings to the believer, or may also warn the individual regarding any kind of sin. These dreams also convey the information about some event, and also conveys the information related to the enemy plotting against the person. In short, the True Dreams which are good are from ALLAH, and only the Islamic Dream Interpretation of true Dreams are possible.

Narrated Abu Qatada: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “A true good dream is from Allah, and a bad dream is from Satan.”

– Sahih al-Bukhari (6984)

False Dream

Besides the true Dream and their Islamic Dream Interpretation, there are the false Dreams as well that are either due to the Gastric Problems and other psychological parameters. These kinds of Dreams do not any significance. Through Gastric and Mind problems, people also see different dreams that don’t hod any reality. Suppose, a person has seen a horror movie, or a horror show and at night, the person sees some strange faces during sleep, then the dream is usually the false dream. This is the dream that gets generated through the mind. The chances of this dream being false is very high compared to being true.

DREAM INTERPRETATION IN ISLAM ACCORDING TO QUR’AN, HADITH, AND SCHOLARS OF ISLAM

Dream Interpretation in Islam according to the Qur’an

The Qur’an has a separate Chapter named Surah Yusuf where Dream Interpretation ability of Hazrat Yusuf (a.s.) is mentioned. Hazrat Yusuf (a.s.) interpreted the Dreams of the two individuals during his days of test in the prison.

When Hazrat Yusuf (a.s.) was a kid, he saw a dream in which all the stars and planets were prostrating before him. His father told Yusuf (a.s.) not to discuss the dream with his own brothers.

The Pharoah during the time of Hazrat Musa (a.s.) also dreamt of his kingdom caught by fire which feared him so much that he immediately called the person expert in Dream interpretation.

Hazrat Ibrahim (a.s.) saw a vision in which He listened ALLAH commanding him to sacrifice his Son.

Muhammad (S.A.W.) also used to have the visions from ALLAH (S.W.T.), as mentioned in the Qur’an;

Thus, Dreams and Dream Interpretation in Islam are a reality, as mentioned in the Qur’an.

IBN SIRIN AND HIS ISLAMIC DREAM INTERPRETATION

He mentioned other situation like Dream Interpretation for a white Snake, Dream Interpretation for a black one, dream Interpretation for the snake getting killed, etc.

Thus, different Situations Ibn Sirin has mentioned in his book regarding the Dreams and Dream Interpretation in Islam.

– Sunan Ibn Majah (3917)

Narrated Abu Qatada: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Whoever sees me (in a dream) then he indeed has seen the truth .”

– Sahih al-Bukhari (6996)

CONCLUSION

Dreams and Dream Interpretation in Islam are a reality, as explained above. However, one must understand the difference between a true Dream and a false dream. For knowing whether the Dream is true or a false one, the individual who has seen the dream must inform the person expert in Islamic Dream Interpretation. Not every Scholar of Islam is expert when it comes to Interpret the Dreams. The field and study of Dreams and Dream Interpretation in Islam is a separate study, and thus only the expert in this area must be contacted. Also, the person must never narrate that dream which is fabricated by him. A person must always narrate the dream actually seen by him. If the person narrates the dream that is a fabricated story, then at the Day of Judgment, the person would be asked to join the two pieces of wheat, which he would be unable to do so, and would receive the punishment in the hereafter. This could be well understood from the life event of Hazrat Yusuf (a.s.) where one individual narrated the true dream to him, while another person who actually did not see any dream narrated the fabricated story to Yusuf (a.s.). However, both the dreams were interpreted, and both the dreams came out to be true. Thus, a person being contacted must always be the person who is expert in dream Interpretation. If someone interprets the dream wrongly, then that interpretation also becomes a reality, We at Islamic Hikayatein also interpret the dreams for our brothers and sisters at just a nominal fee of $10.
